Do you feel lucky? If you're feeling this way, you should play the Florida Powerball. There are always a million reasons to play the Florida Powerball.

The Powerball is one of the country's most popular lottery games, with 45 states participating (sorry to those in Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, and Utah). When there's a large Powerball jackpot, you'll hear about it. And while almost every state participates, every state has its own rules and regulations.

Want to play the Florida Powerball, but don't know how to? Read this article to learn everything you must know about Powerball Florida. This is your ultimate guide to the Powerball lottery.

What Is the Powerball?

The Powerball is a lottery game that's offered in 45 states. It's also offered in D.C. and in several American territories.

The first inaugural Powerball drawing was on April 19, 1992. Over the years, more states have participated in this lottery game.

In 1998, Florida's legislation gave the state permission to offer Powerball to Floridians. The first drawing in Florida was set for early 1999, but it was a no-go as the then governor of the state objected to it. It was until 2009 that the first drawing was held in Florida.

There's a potential for the Powerball jackpot to grow to hundreds of millions of dollars. Its jackpot can go up high because all 48 states contribute a percentage of sales to a shared top-prize pool.

The game's starting jackpot is $20 million. In a matter of months, the jackpot can go up to hundreds of millions of dollars. When it does so, Powerball players like to buy lots of tickets.

How To Play the Florida Lottery Powerball

The Florida Powerball works in the same way as other states. To play, you’ll buy a ticket from a lottery retailer within the state. Powerball drawings occur twice per week, and five white balls numbered 1 through 69, as well as a red Powerball numbered 1 through 26, are drawn. Your goal is to match all of these numbers in any order to win the jackpot.

To play the Florida Lottery Powerball, you must be at least 18. Powerball tickets cost $2 per play. Think about this as the starting cost to play this type of lottery game as there are other variations.

The goal is simple. To win the jackpot, you must match all five white balls and the Powerball. There are other ways to win, but we'll talk about that after.

The easiest way to buy a Florida Powerball ticket is to play at a retailer. Make sure you're buying a ticket at an authorized Florida Lottery retail location. When you buy your ticket, you can tell the retailer which six numbers you’d like to select. Or, you can choose to go with a “quick pick” in which you will receive a random set of numbers. The odds of winning the jackpot and getting all matching numbers are one in 292,201,338 — that’s a bit more likely than winning the Mega Millions.

Of course, you can still win prizes even if you don’t match all the numbers — it just won’t be a life-changing jackpot.

At the retailer, you'll fill out a playslip with a pencil. The playslip contains five panels (A-E). You can play up to five plays (one play per panel).

Each panel has numbers 1 through 69. You'll find these numbers in the upper play area. In this area, you must select five numbers.

Then, you move down to the lower play area. In this area, are the numbers 1 through 26. Here, you must pick one number, or the Powerball.

If you're having trouble selecting numbers or want to try your luck, you can select the Quick Pick (QP) box. If you mark this box, you let the terminal randomly select the Florida Powerball numbers.

After you pick your numbers, give the playslip to and payment to the retailer. You'll get a printed ticket with your numbers.

Now, there's a new way you can play the Powerball game in Florida. You can use your smartphone to buy a Powerball ticket. Yes, you read that right.

All you must do is download the free Florida Lottery mobile app. After you open the app, you must select the "Powerball" game option. From there, you can select your numbers.

Other Ways To Play the Florida Powerball

Want to mix up your playing experience? You can do so by buying different add-on features. Doing so can increase the prizes and add more chances to win. You can amplify your winnings with double play and power play. One way to increase your chances of winning is by adding the Power Play option. You can add it by paying an extra $1 per play, and it gives you the chance of winning multipliers on non-jackpot prizes.

This gives you the opportunity to win $2 million. You can win by matching the five white balls or by multiplying the other non-jackpot prizes.

If you choose, you can add Double Play for $1 per play. This feature allows you to win up to $10 million. This is for a separate drawing following the Powerball drawing.

How To Find Out if You’re a Winner

After you have your tickets, you want to know if you're a big winner. The Powerball drawings are held Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. They're held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern.

You can check your ticket on the Florida Lottery's official website. You can also check on the Lottery's free mobile app. If you wish, you can check the ticket at a retailer.

What Should You Do if You Win

You check the Florida Powerball results and you find out you won a prize. What do you do?

If you happen to win the jackpot, let us be the first to tell you congratulations! You have truly defied the odds. Next, you’ll need to file a claim to receive your money. You can do this by filing a claim and mailing your winning ticket to a Florida Lottery District Office or driving to a physical lottery headquarters to do it in person.

If you win a prize of less than $600, you can claim it at any retailer. If the prize is $600 or more can claim in-person via walk-in at Lottery Headquarters. You can also claim it at any district office.

If the prize is $1 million and above, you must claim it at the Lottery Headquarters. It's a good idea to check with the Florida Lottery's official website if you have any questions.

Winning a big jackpot comes with a lot of responsibility. If you win big, you should consider focusing on your personal finance. It's a good idea to save as much of the earnings as you can.

Under Florida law, you cannot remain anonymous if you win the jackpot. The only states that do allow anonymity are Delaware, Mayland, California, Texas, and South Carolina.

However, you can still decide how to receive your payments: one lump sum or annuity. With a lump-sum payment, you’ll get all the prize money upfront (minus taxes). If you opt for annuity payments, you’ll get annual payments at scheduled intervals up until the day you die or the prize money is paid off.

Speaking of taxes, Florida state will withhold 24% of your winnings from prizes greater than $5,000, so be prepared to lose a little bit of the prize.

If it makes you feel any better, almost every state will tax a lottery jackpot in the same way. The exceptions are California and Delaware, which do not tax lottery winnings.

Powerball is one of the most popular lottery games across the country, but it is certainly not the only one.
